Two FIFA vice-presidents arrested over corruption charges

Swiss authorities conducted an extraordinary operation on Wednesday morning, detaining several top FIFA officials.

Two vice-presidents of the FIFA Executive Committee – Jeffry Webb and Eugenio Figueredo – as well as Jack Warner, a member of the Committee, were taken into police custody while in the Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich. They were in Switzerland to attend FIFA’s annual assembly. The meeting, which will be held on Friday, is expected to re-elect current president Joseph Blatter.

A total of 10 FIFA officials’ arrest has been sanctioned. However, some of them are not in Switzerland. The 10 are charged with corruption in bids for World Cups as well as marketing and broadcast deals. The charges also include racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy.

Note that, there have been numerous claims in European media of the FIFA leadership taking a great deal of bribe in exchange for support to Russia and Qatar to be the host countries of the 2018 and 2020 world cups respectively.

The detainees will be extradited to the United States on federal corruption charges.
