Azerbaijani embassy in Estonia prevents Armenian provocation
On behalf of the University of Tartu, I regret if the recent visit of our student group to Nagorno-Karabakh has caused misunderstandings in our relations. The aims of the visit were purely educational and it was not politically motivated in any way.

Rector of the University of Tartu, Professor Volli Kalm made the remarks in his letter to Tofig Zulfugarov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Estonia.

The rector said the group was unaware of such consequences of visiting Nagorno-Karabakh without the approval of the relevant state bodies of Azerbaijan, adding the University will endeavor to avoid such incidents in the future.

V. Kalm noted that the University of Tartu respects fully the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognized borders and remains committed to this principle.

On 16 May 2015, several Armenian and Russian media outlets reported that teachers and students of the international relations faculty at the University of Tartu visited the self-called Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. According to Armenian media reports, the visit was aimed at establishing relations with the “Artsakh State University”. However, the Azerbaijani embassy in Estonia take appropriate actions on this issue, sending a letter to the rector of the University of Tartu for explanation.

Rector of the University of Tartu, Professor Volli Kalm attended the International Humanitarian Forum in Baku in November 2013. During the visit, the Baku State University and the University of Tartu signed a memorandum on cooperation.
