Armenian Police Use Excessive Force and Special Means Against Protesters - PHOTOS, VIDEOS
About thousands of demonstrators marched Monday to the presidential headquarters, but were stopped by phalanxes of riot police backed by water cannons AzVision.az reports quoting Armenian media.

The protesters then sat on the road, blocking traffic. Police warned they would disperse the rally.

The demonstrators are demanding that the government reconsider its decision to increase electricity prices for households by 17-22 percent.

Yerevan Deputy Police Chief Valery Osipyan noted that Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan is ready to receive a group of 3-4 activists if the rest return to Liberty Square and cancel their march to the president`s residence.

However, the demonstrators turned down the offer and continued their way to Baghramyan 26.

As reported by the Armenian Mass Media, police formed a barrier to prevent protesters from approaching the president`s office.

Armenian police made a statement, claiming that the march taking place in capital Yerevan against electricity price hike is illegal.
Referring to the Law on Police and Administrative Violations Code, the police stated that in case of disobeying lawful requirements of the police or counteraction, the march will no longer be considered peaceful and will be stopped in accordance with the manner provided by law.

The police warn that they are authorized to use physical force and special measures with regard to the violators.

Early in the morning of June 23 Armenian police dispersed sedentary picket on Baghramian Avenue in the center of Yerevan, AzVision.az reports quoting Armenian media.

A number of protesters were arrested during 15-minut crackdown of the protests.
