Armenian president calls on government to resign

The government must resign to give hope to the people, said Armenian President Armen Sarkissian at a meeting with Gyumri residents, AzVision.az reports.

"From day one, as president, I proposed a very simple solution - let the government resign, because it was defeated and it is very difficult to continue. At the same time, even if the government is not to blame, in any case, this page should be closed and restarted to give people hope", Sarkissian noted.

Opposition politicians and their supporters have been demanding that Nikol Pashinyan step down over the Nov. 10 peace deal that saw Azerbaijan reclaim control over large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas. The Russia-brokered agreement ended 44 days of fierce fighting in which the Azerbaijani army routed Armenian forces.

On December 25, Pashinyan called on political forces to hold consultations on conduct early parliamentary elections in 2021.

The Armenian President has repeatedly highlighted the significane of the resignation of the Cabinet of Ministers, the establishment of an interim government and the holding of early parliamentary elections.
