 Foreign diplomats arrive in Jabrayil district of Azerbaijan - UPDATED

On February 6, the heads of the diplomatic corps in Azerbaijan, military attaches and journalists arrived in the Jabrayil district, which was liberated from the Armenian occupation during the second Nagorno-Karabakh War, AzVision.az reports.

The purpose of the visit is to get acquainted with the atrocities and crimes committed by the Armenian Armed Forces in the ancient lands of Azerbaijan.

The diplomats and military attaches were accompanied by Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the First Vice President Elchin Amirbayov and others.

The heads of the diplomatic corps, military attaches and journalists will go to Zangilan after getting acquainted with the Armenian atrocities in Jabrayil.

Note, Jabrayil was occupied by Armenian forces on August 23, 1993, during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War and was administrated as a part of Hadrut Province of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic except the village of Jojuq Mərcanlı, was liberated on January 6, 1994, during Operation Horadiz. This village was the provisional centre of this district until the liberation of Jabrayil on October 9, 2020.

The region with 1,050 square km area, including 72 secondary schools, eight hospitals, five mosques, two museums, 120 historic monuments, 149 cultural centers and about 100 villages remained in the area were totally destroyed.

During the second Nagorno-Karabakh war, on October 9, 2020, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence announced the liberation of the district's central town, Jabrayil, from Armenian Armed Forces. 

The territories of Azerbaijan, which was occupied by Armenia nearly 30 years ago, was liberated from the occupation during the 44-day Second Nagorno-Karabakh War. The war started on September 27 when the Armenian Armed Forces launched a large-scale military attack on positions of Azerbaijani army on the front line, using large-caliber weapons, mortars and artillery and lasted until November 10. Until November 10, the Azerbaijan Army liberated some villages and cities of Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Gubadli, Zangilan, Khojavend, Khojaly, Terter, Shusha and Lachin districts. 

On November 10, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement to end six weeks of fierce fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In accordance with the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, we have left for the liberated districts- Jabrayil and Zangilan with ambassadors, military attachés and heads of international organizations, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev tweeted.

Under the agreement, Russian peacekeepers are being deployed along the front line in Nagorno-Karabakh and the corridor between the region and Armenia.

A total of 1,960 Russian peacekeepers are to be deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh under a five-year mandate.

Also, according to the agreement, on 20 November, Armenia handed over the Aghdam region which lies to the east of Nagorno-Karabakh, to Azerbaijan. This followed on 25 November by the Kalbajar region to the northwest of Nagorno-Karabakh. 

Finally, on 1 December, Armenia handed over the Lachin District, over which the Lachin pass connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia passes.
