UN resolution on nuclear deal favoring US administration against Congress
The recent UN Security Council resolution endorsing Iran
The United Nations Security Council on July 20 unanimously adopted a resolution establishing a monitoring system for Iran ’s nuclear program and considering the “eventual removal” of all nuclear-related sanctions against the country.

By doing so, the Council endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is described as the “culmination” of diplomatic efforts by the group P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) and Iran, “to reach a comprehensive, long-term and proper solution to the Iranian nuclear issue”.

The resolution obliges all involved governments to observe the terms of the nuclear deal, Ahmad Naqibzadeh, political affairs expert and university professor told Trend July 21. Therefore, it would be contrary to international rules for governments to disregard the resolution, he concluded.

Naqibzadeh also commented on the arms embargo removal procedure envisaged in the deal. In answer to the question whether the West seems to have the political will to lift the embargo, the expert refrained to comment directly and said that the embargo is planned to be lifted once the West tests Iran’s truthfulness in its nuclear program.

The military part of the deal is very important both to Iran and the six powers. Iran has said that its military power is a red line and the Islamic Republic will not compromise on it. However, the deal states that the arms embargo will be lifted after five to eight years of trust-building cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.
