Extraordinary plenary meeting of NAM group under UNESCO held under chairmanship of Azerbaijan

Another plenary online meeting of a group of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) under UNESCO was held within the Azerbaijani representative office, AzVision.az reports on June 30.

The meeting, chaired by the permanent representative of Azerbaijan to UNESCO, envoy Elman Abdullayev, was attended by the Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Xing Qu, and also envoys of the NAM member and observer countries.

First, the agenda of the meeting was approved and new representatives of the NAM were presented to UNESCO.

Abdullayev informed of the successful work done under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan in the Non-Aligned Movement.

Besides, he spoke about the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement to hold the summit of the Contact Group of the organization on the topic ‘Together against COVID-19’, and the issue of unfair and unequal distribution of coronavirus vaccine on a global scale, emphasized by the president.

Xing Qu, who is also the assistant director-general for communication and information, spoke about the strategic transformation of UNESCO, including the efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and the main directions of the medium-term strategy for 2022-2025.

The results of the previous plenary session, which took place on March 30, 2021, were confirmed.

The participants also exchanged views on the candidacies of countries, being the NAM members, for various bodies of UNESCO.
