“The former Autonomous Region of Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven surrounding districts have seen intense combat operations. International experience – especially in the Balkans – suggests that about 4 to 6 percent of such areas is often polluted with landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO),” said Hafiz Safikhanov, the chairman of the ‘Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines’ Public Union.

H. Safikhanov noted that an estimated area of approximately 500 to 800 million square meters of Azerbaijani territories under occupation is suspicious and dangerous, APA reported.

According to him, former polygons, blown-up ammunition depots, and landmines dispersed over large territories are now causing serious problems for Azerbaijan.

“A large number of UXOs have recently surfaced in Saloglu, Sumgayit’s Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev settlement, Guzdek, and Jeyrangol. Furthermore, air bombs left from the Soviet Army have been discovered in Samukh district and they are extremely hazardous for civilians,” said Hafiz Safikhanov.
