The glacier in Tufandag is melting away-PHOTOS
National Hydro-meteorology Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources launched an expedition to research the Tufandag glacier.

Information given to AzVision.az from the ministry states the recent researches, conducted at a height of 3755 meters, to reveal the area of the glacier to be tightened and the melting process accelerated. Moreover, the number of cracks and their size on the ice glacier has possessed an increasing trend. Glacier tongue has shortened to 10-13 meters and the water level in Mahmuddere river has increased.

Experts defined glacier’s parameters via GPS and laser based distance assessment systems.

Recall, the Tufandag glacier is located to the East-north from the Tufan`s peak and is deemed as the biggest glacier around. The glacier is inclined to gravitate to North, but mostly stays stagnant.

Moreover, global ecological cooling and warming is associated with the rapid change in the glaciers size. In other words, glaciers being the indicators of the global environmental developments are also indispensable objects to investigate them. At the same time they possess a role as huge fresh water reserves.

The meteorological situation in the glacier of Shadag, Tufandag and Shah mountains are being observed via autamatic meteorological stations installed in the area.
