Turkey is determined to use the authority given by the Montreux Convention on Turkish Straits in a manner to prevent escalation of Russia-Ukraine crisis," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a press conference late Monday.
Under the 1936 Montreux Convention, NATO member Turkey has control over the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits, linking the Mediterranean and Black seas. The pact gives Ankara the power to regulate the transit of naval warships and to close the straits to foreign warships during wartime and when it is threatened.
"Turkey will not compromise from commitments to alliances, but will not turn back from Ukraine or Russia," Erdoğan also said.
"Very saddened by Ukraine-Russia war, says Turkey called sides to solve problems through dialogue," he also added.
Erdoğan also said that Russian attack on Ukraine “unacceptable,” and that he admires Ukraine’s resistance.
"Turkey will overcome Ukraine-Russia crisis safely."
