Azerbaijani grandmaster Shahriyar Mammadyarov has beaten reigning world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in Round 5 of the Super United Rapid & Blitz Croatia 2022, taking place in Zagreb from July 20 to 25.
The same day, Mammadyarov drew with Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in Round 4 and lost to French Alireza Firouzja in Round 6.
The Super United Rapid & Blitz Croatia is the 3rd leg of the 2022 Grand Chess Tour, a series of five events with a total prize fund of $1.4 million. The format is a round-robin of rapid chess followed by a double round-robin of blitz among 10 top grandmasters. The prize fund is $175,000.
