 Death toll surpasses 22,000 in quake-hit Türkiye - UPDATED

The number of people who died as a result of the powerful earthquake in Türkiye has reached 22,327, and 80,278 people were injured, AzVision.az reports.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 hit southeastern Türkiye on Feb. 6, 2023. The earthquake occurred at a depth of seven kilometers in the Pazarcik region of Kahramanmaras Province. The provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis, Osmaniye, Malatya, Adiyaman, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, and Kahramanmaras were subjected to severe destruction.

The quake’s epicenter was located 26 km away from the city of Gaziantep with a population of about 1.06 million.

At least 20,665 people were killed and 80,088 others injured by two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Monday, the country's disaster agency said on Saturday, AzVision.az reports citing Anadolu Agency.

The death toll rose to 20,318 with more than 80,000 thousand wounded from Monday's devastating earthquakes in southern Türkiye, the country's disaster agency said early Saturday, AzVision.az reports citing Anadolu Agency.

The 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude earthquakes, centered in the Kahramanmaras province, affected more than 13 million people across 10 provinces including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in the space of less than 10 hours.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing and rescue teams still find survivors days after deadly tremors.

A man, 34, was found alive 117 hours after the quake in Kahramanmaras.
