German union announces fresh rail strike over pay dispute

German railway workers will stage a nationwide warning strike on Friday, a transport union announced on Wednesday, AzVision.az reports citing Anadolu Agency.

The strike will last from 3 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) to 11 a.m. (0900 GMT), according to a statement by the EVG union.

“By calling for a limited warning strike in the early morning hours, we’re sending a clear message that our action is not directed against passengers, but the companies,” EVG board member Cosima Ingenschay said.

The strike action is expected to cause delays and cancelations in regional and long-distance passenger trains across the country throughout Friday.

The EVG, which has more than 200,000 members, is currently in wage negotiations with the national rail operator Deutsche Bahn, and some 50 other railway companies.

The union is demanding a 12% and no less than €650 ($712) wage increase per month, amid high inflation and the cost-of-living crisis.
