The restrictions could affect 35 individuals and two legal entities, including government officials, judges, prison officials, and the prisons IK-3 and IK-6.
Earlier, Australia, Britain, Canada and the US introduced restrictive measures against Russia in connection with Navalny's death. On February 28, Reuters reported that eight EU countries sent a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell asking to set up a new sanctions mechanism that would target Russia's Interior Ministry system, courts and the penitentiary system.
On February 16, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service’s office for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District reported that Navalny died in prison after he felt sick and fainted following a walk. Doctors arrived immediately but their more than 30-minute resuscitation efforts failed.
