On March 13, President Ilham Aliyev received Wu Hongbo, the special representative of the Chinese Government for European affairs.
Wu Hongbo congratulated Ilham Aliyev on his recent re-election and conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who had also sent a congratulatory letter. He further congratulated President Aliyev on Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29.
President Aliyev expressed his gratitude and asked Wu Hongbo to reciprocate his greetings to Xi Jinping.
Wu Hongbo praised Azerbaijan's achievements under President Aliyev's leadership across various sectors. He highlighted the 2022 meeting between the presidents in Samarkand as a major boost for bilateral relations, emphasizing that Azerbaijan-China ties are currently at an all-time high.
President Aliyev recalled the productive meeting in Samarkand and expressed Azerbaijan's commitment to further strengthen relations with China. He emphasized Azerbaijan's interest in close cooperation within the COP framework, particularly in renewable energy, where China has made significant advancements. President Aliyev reiterated Azerbaijan's commitment to the green transition and expressed interest in establishing joint ventures for renewable energy production.
Wu Hongbo expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan's unwavering support for China's territorial integrity. President Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan's adherence to the one-China policy and its strong condemnation of Taiwan's independence elections.
Both sides emphasized the excellent state of bilateral relations built on mutual trust. They discussed cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative and the importance of the Middle Corridor for Azerbaijan. President Aliyev highlighted the Middle Corridor's strategic significance and Azerbaijan's joint venture with Kazakhstan and Georgia for its development. He emphasized the recent arrival of a cargo train from China in Baku during the Kazakh President's visit as a testament to the Middle Corridor's potential.
Wu Hongbo acknowledged the importance of the upcoming 11th Global Baku Forum.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing appreciation for their mutual support within international organizations and a commitment to expanding cultural and humanitarian cooperation.
