Armenian Prime Nikol Pashinyan has officially refused to revise Armenia's constitution, whose preamble enshrines territorial claims to Azerbaijan's Karabakh region, AzVision.az reports citing the Armenian media.
"Regarding the amendments to the Constitution, I believe that linking this issue, trying to bring this to the negotiating table is torpedoing the peace process, and I do not rule out that there are certain tendencies to interfere in Armenia's internal affairs and initiate processes in Armenia based on certain disinformation,” the prime minister told reporters in parliament.
“I talked about changing the Constitution back in 2018, then in 2019, and our agenda is exclusively related to democratic reforms, and we said that changing the Constitution cannot be part of the negotiations," he added.
To recall, back in February this year, Pashinyan, answering a question about possible amendments to the constitution, noted that Armenia cannot make a decision that doesn’t suit Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
Moreover, Pashinyan touched upon the issue of opening communications between Baku and Yerevan. He considers it quite possible to open communications with Azerbaijan before the signing of the peace treaty, as well as the delimitation of the border.
"It is quite possible to form a real peace through practical steps and then only sign an agreement. But in any case, a peace agreement should be signed," the prime minister said.
