`Brussels must put end to double standards towards Azerbaijan
"The European Parliament resolution dated 9 September 2015 on Azerbaijan not only harm relations between the EU and Azerbaijan but also destabilizes the whole South Caucasus,” said Matthias Dornfeldt, head of the Berlin-based European Institute for the Caucasus and Caspian Studies, according to vestikavkaza.ru.

He said that Brussels must put an end to applying double standards over Azerbaijan’s democratic development and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"When it comes to other post-Soviet states, European politicians turn a blind eye to many things. The sanctions rarely achieve their goals. In addition, Azerbaijan is an important partner of the EU in the field of energy cooperation. In case of sanctions, Baku will turn away from the West and take retaliatory measures to protect Azerbaijan from unfair steps," said the expert.

According to M. Dornfeldt, constructive signals should be sent to Eurasia rather than adopting similar resolutions. In his opinion, such a signal would be, for example, visa facilitation, and about Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan the total abolition of the Schengen Area.

"Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have a higher GDP per capita than many of Eastern European countries. At the same time, both countries have relatively low numbers of population. There is no fear of economic emigration from these countries,” he said.
