Azerbaijan attends 50th session of OIC council of foreign ministers

The 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held in the capital of the Republic of Cameroon, Yaounde, on August 29-30, 2024, AzVision.az reports, referring to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

Meanwhile, a delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov represented the Republic of Azerbaijan at the session.

Addressing the session, Elnur Mammadov expressed gratitude to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for the successful chairmanship of the OIC Foreign Affairs Council and wished success to the new chairing country, the Republic of Cameroon.

Mammadov provided detailed information on the normalization process in the post-Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict period and Armenia's provocative steps hindering it, as well as mine threats.

He noted that the Republic of Azerbaijan is actively working to establish peace and interstate relations that will ensure permanent stability in the region and pave the way for full-fledged regional normalization and cooperation. The end of the armed conflict in 2020 provided a unique opportunity for both countries to overcome the consequences of years of hostility and establish good neighborly relations.

The Deputy Minister underlined the full commitment to the normalization process initiated by Azerbaijan and proposed by Armenia.

In his speech, the Deputy Minister also mentioned that this year Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and emphasized that holding this event in an OIC member state for three consecutive years is a remarkable fact.

Noting that COP29 is an important milestone for Azerbaijan, the Deputy Minister stated that Azerbaijan will do its best to mobilize the international community in promoting the global climate agenda, drawing on the experience of Azerbaijan's recent chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement in bringing together countries with different levels of development and political affiliation.

The Deputy Minister also mentioned in his speech that Azerbaijan puts forward new ideas and initiatives to increase the capacity of the OIC, and one such initiative is the establishment of the OIC Labor Center.

Following the results of the Ministerial Council, four resolutions were adopted on the initiative of Azerbaijan.

In the resolutions “Elimination of the Consequences of the Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan”, “Support of the Economic and Social Development Activities in the Territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan Liberated from the Occupation” and “Destruction and Desecration of Historical and Cultural Monuments and Monuments of the Islamic Religion in the Territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan as a result of the Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan” the policy of occupation and aggression conducted by Armenia against Azerbaijan for almost 30 years is condemned.

The resolution “Solidarity with the victims of the Khojaly Massacre of 1992” condemns the massacre committed on February 26, 1992, in Khojaly against the civilian population of Azerbaijan and urges the international community to recognize this massacre as genocide, a crime against humanity, and a war crime. It expresses support to the public campaign “Justice for Khojaly”.
