Azerbaijan observes "day of silence" ahead of parliamentary elections

Today marks a "day of silence" in Azerbaijan as the nation prepares for the September 1 elections to the Milli Majlis (Parliament).

The campaigning period for registered candidates, their authorized representatives, political parties, and political party blocs ended on August 31 at 08:00, AzVision.az reports.

As stipulated by the Electoral Code, the election campaign commences 23 days before the election day and is suspended 24 hours prior to voting. Campaigning for the Milli Majlis elections began on August 9.

On September 1, polling stations will be open from 08:00 to 19:00. A total of 990 candidates are competing for 125 parliamentary seats.

President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree on June 28 to dissolve the sixth convocation of the Milli Majlis and call for snap parliamentary elections on September 1, 2024. Consequently, the pre-election campaign ran from August 9 to August 31 at 08:00.

Azerbaijani parliament members are elected for five-year terms through a majority electoral system, based on universal, equal, and direct voting by citizens. The recently dissolved parliament was the sixth legislature since 1995.

While parliamentary elections are generally held every five years on the first Sunday in November, a 2016 constitutional amendment permits shorter terms for deputies elected in snap elections, with subsequent elections scheduled for the first Sunday in November of the fifth year of the parliament’s term.
