Azerbaijan, UN mull existing cooperation agenda

Azerbaijan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the margins of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

AzVision.az reports, citing the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the UN, Azerbaijan's preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the current situation in the region during the post-conflict period.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov highlighted the importance of Azerbaijan's cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies. He noted that the active cooperation under the COP29 Presidency plays a crucial role in the successful execution of the presidency.

Providing detailed information about COP29 Presidency’s priority areas and initiatives, Minister Bayramov stated that significant efforts are in progress to reach an agreement on the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance.

The meeting also addressed the post-conflict situation in the region, restoration and reconstruction projects aimed at ensuring the dignified return of former internally displaced persons, and the reconciliation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including bilateral negotiations and the main challenges surrounding the signing of a peace treaty.

Bayramov noted that despite several advancements in the bilateral negotiation process territorial claims against Azerbaijan in Armenia's constitution and other legislative acts pose a major obstacle to peace.
