Mukhtar Babayev: Combatting the climate crisis also means addressing injustice and inequity

“Combating the climate change also means addressing injustice and inequity,” said Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, COP29 President-Designate, as he delivered a speech at the Baku-hosted International Forum of Ombudsmen.

Noting that Azerbaijan has joined various international conventions, Mukhtar Babayev emphasized that Azerbaijan is actively involved to combating climate change. Highlighting the resolution adopted by the UN in 2022, the minister mentioned the grave consequences of climate change. He underlined that natural resource depletion and increase intensity of natural disasters are matters of serious concern.

Mentioning the hydro-meteorological stations established throughout the country, COP29 President-Designate underscored: "Climate finance is a centrepiece of COP29 discussion. It is planned to formulate a new quantitative target. Integration and adaptation are also vital issues. As the host of COP29, Azerbaijan has put forth 14 key initiatives. Our goal is to contribute to addressing the global challenge."
