The announcement was made during the 17th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) in Cordoba, Spain, by Bruno Marchand, OWHC President and Mayor of Quebec City, AzVision.az reports.
The event gathered mayors and representatives from over 100 historic cities. The Jean-Paul-L'Allier Prize, awarded every two years since 2009, recognizes exceptional projects and programs that protect and manage historical urban areas.
The Baku Khan’s Palace Complex, reopened in 2020 by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev after a major restoration, was selected from 12 finalists, including cities like Quebec, Krakow, Kotor and Mexico City.
The winning project, titled “Increasing Livability in the Walled City of Baku (Icherisheher): The Baku Khans’ Park and the Baku Khans’ Palace Complex,” was chosen by jury members representing the OWHC member states.
The Administration of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve "Icherisheher" has been an OWHC member since 2016. Founded in 1993 and headquartered in Quebec, Canada, has over 200 members. All of the historic member cities are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
