Azerbaijan declares launch of Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience

Azerbaijan, as COP29 chair, announced the launch of the “Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience” and this initiative is aimed at strengthening cross-sectoral interaction and complementarity between education, health, and employment, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, Health Minister Teymur Musayev said, AzVision.az reports.

He made the remark at the opening of the 74th session of the European Regional Committee of the World Health Organization in Copenhagen.

In his speech, the Minister emphasized that 2024 was declared in Azerbaijan the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World”. The decree of the head of state notes that the Republic of Azerbaijan, as a reliable and responsible member of the international community, contributes to the fight against the effects of climate change.

“Azerbaijan is always committed to the green agenda, and in November this year our country will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP29,” he said.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
