The preservation of ecological balance, environmental protection, and rational use of natural resources have recently become particularly urgent issues, and the states are constantly taking urgent measures in this direction, the Ombudsman's Office of Azerbaijan reported.
Furthermore, it was noted that by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated January 19, 2024, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan was included in the Organizing Committee established in connection with COP29, the 19th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, and the 6th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement. The Baku International Forum of Ombudspersons “Climate Change and Human Rights: the Role of the Ombudspersons and National Human Rights Institutions” was held on October 2, 2024, on the initiative of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson of the Republic of Azerbaijan) on the eve of COP29.
“Plenary discussions on ‘Human rights-based climate justice: the role of national human rights institutions’ will be held in the Blue Zone on November 14, 2024, as part of the COP29 events. The event will feature discussions on the identified indicators with the participation of government authorities, accredited civil society representatives, and international organizations. In the framework of the Ombudsperson's membership in the Organizing Committee, it is envisaged to hold seminars and round tables on such issues as “The role of municipalities in the protection and promotion of environmental rights”, “The role of non-governmental organizations in the protection and promotion of environmental rights”, “The role of media entities in the protection and promotion of environmental rights”, “The role of trade union organizations in the protection and promotion of environmental rights”, “Cooperation between state bodies, civil society institutions, and the private sector in the field of protection and promotion of environmental rights”, “Cooperation between state bodies, civil society institutions, and the private sector in the field of environmental protection and promotion,” the ombudsperson's office said.
