Spain’s Madrid hosts event highlighting Azerbaijan

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, observed annually worldwide on December 10, an event highlighting the problem of mine contamination in Azerbaijan was held in Madrid, Spain.

The event was organized at the initiative of world's most famous Spanish photojournalist Gervasio Sánchez, specializing in war and armed conflicts. Earlier on April 25 - May 12, 2024, Gervasio Sánchez visited Azerbaijani to collect information on mine victims and highlight the landmine problem.

The event featured the presentation of a photography magazine titled "Silent Echo: Untold Stories of Landmine Victims" featuring the materials and photographs collected by Sánchez during his visits to Karabakh and East Zangezur regions, especially on the basis of personal interactions with about thirty landmine victims.

The photography magazine contains more than 70 photographs.

Addressing the event, Sevil Mikayilova, MP of the Milli Majlis, head of the working group on Azerbaijan-Spain inter-parliamentary relations, Nariman Gasimov, representative of the Azerbaijan's Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), and others detailed the participants on landmine threat in Azerbaijan and the environmental problems caused by mining.

Characterizing the scale of the mine problem in Azerbaijan, Gervasio Sánchez, stressed that he had not encountered a mine threat on this scale anywhere else in the world, as he had visited more than 30 countries facing the mine threat.

The event concluded with an e-exhibition of photographs taken by Gervasio Sánchez in Azerbaijan.
