Georgian parliament speaker calls US sanctions on Georgia "senseless"

The decision by the US State Department to impose sanctions on Georgia is incomprehensible and devoid of any sense, according to Shalva Papuashvili, the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, AzVision.az reports, citing Georgian media.

"First of all, this is an administration that lost the elections. Their mandate is expiring, and despite this, they are damaging relations on behalf of the American people with an important partner like Georgia, which is, of course, very troubling," he said.

The speaker noted that the Biden administration itself had taken harsh measures against participants in the demonstration at the Capitol in January 2021, sentencing them to lengthy prison terms. "Apparently, what is allowed for Jupiter is not allowed for the bull. Democracy cannot mean one thing in one case and another in another," Papuashvili remarked.

The US State Department announced today that it would impose a ban on issuing American visas to certain Georgian citizens. These restrictions will affect 20 individuals, including ministers of the Georgian government, law enforcement and security officials, and private individuals.
