Magnitude 3.1 quake jolts Italy’s Campi Flegrei area

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the Campi Flegrei area near Naples, Italy, at 8:52 on Wednesday as a wave of seismic activity in the volcanic caldera continued, AzVision.az reports, citing ANSA.

The quake struck at a depth of 2.7 kilometres, was preceded by one of magnitude 2.6 at 8:32 and was are part of a swarm that began at 8:11.

The quake could be felt in several districts of Naples, especially in apartments on the upper floors of buildings.

The Campi Flegrei area, also known the Phlegrean Fields in English, is currently being affected by bradyseism, or ground uplift, and there have been a series of earthquakes over the last year.

Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area to take care of risk-prevention measures.

The minister has complained about how urban development had been allowed in the area.
