Ukraine commemorates Khojaly genocide victims amid war

A commemorative event featuring the screening of the documentary "Endless Corridor" to mark the 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide was held at the Zhovten cinema hall in Kyiv.

Organized by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Ukraine, the event drew deputies from Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada, representatives from the country's Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, members of the diplomatic corps, leaders of the Crimean Tatars, historians, academics, teachers, and others.

Participants observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of the Khojaly tragedy.

In his address, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Ukraine Seymur Mardaliyev provided detailed information about the Khojaly genocide. On the night of February 25-26, 1992, Armenian armed forces, supported by the 366th motorized rifle regiment of the former USSR, attacked the city of Khojaly and massacred the civilian population. The attack resulted in the deaths of 613 residents, including 63 children and 106 women, with 1,275 people taken prisoner and subjected to torture. The fate of 150 individuals remains unknown. Eight families were completely destroyed, and 25 children lost both parents in this act of genocide.

Lithuanian journalist Ricardas Lapaitis, one of the documentary's authors, shared his firsthand experiences in Aghdam during late February and early March of 1992.

The event concluded with the screening of "Endless Corridor," which left a profound impression on the audience.
