  Azerbaijani FM adresses OIC extraordinary meeting

On March 7, Azerbaijan Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov delivered a speech at the extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers within the framework of his working visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, AzVision.az reports, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov conveyed his best wishes to the entire Islamic world on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

He noted that the current humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and Palestine, the mass casualty of innocent people, the destruction of infrastructure, the shortage of food and water in the territory remain a source of concern, the use of force that leads to the death of civilians is unacceptable, emphasizing the importance of taking urgent and decisive steps to end this situation.

In this regard, Bayramov said that the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inadmissibility of the use of force under international law should prevail.

According to the top diplomat, Azerbaijan welcomed the ceasefire achieved in January and emphasized the importance of refraining from violating the ceasefire and taking steps that would lead to further escalation. The importance of the achieved ceasefire playing the role of the beginning of a sustainable peace process based on international law, including the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, was stated.

In this context, Bayramov reiterated that Azerbaijan supports the resolution of the conflict on the basis of the "two-state solution", in accordance with the norms and principles of international law, and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

In addition to the peace initiatives currently underway, he noted the importance of humanitarian aid efforts. According to the minister, Azerbaijan, as a responsible member of the OIC, as well as the OIC chairman in 2026, is always ready to support the brotherly Palestinian people. In this regard, in addition to previous years, he noted that since 2023, when the escalation began, Azerbaijan has provided assistance in the amount of $2 million to alleviate the humanitarian situation of the Palestinian people.

Bayramov said his country has taken the initiative to support the Palestinian people in the field of education and healthcare, and in this regard, the “Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant” has been allocated to 15 students from Palestine for 2024-2025, and Azerbaijan has also undertaken to build a 600-person school in Nablus.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized during his speech that his country supports the plan put forward by Egypt for the reconstruction and assistance to Gaza and approved during the Extraordinary Arab Summit on March 4. During his speech, the minister congratulated Syria on the restoration of its membership in the OIC. Support was expressed for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria, as well as for the restoration of lasting peace and stability in the country.
