12th Global Baku Forum holds panel session on “COP29: Breakthrough to Belem – Accelerating Transformation

The 12th Global Baku Forum, organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center under the patronage of President Ilham Aliyev, continued on Friday with a panel session titles “COP29: Breakthrough to Belem – Accelerating Transformation.”

The session, moderated by Jan Baderschneider, a member of the Board of Directors of Fortescue Ltd. and former Vice President of ExxonMobil, featured a video address by Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. Johnson highlighted the forum’s role in tackling pressing global issues and emphasized the collective responsibility to shape a sustainable future.

Nigar Arpadarai, a member of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, expressed pride in Azerbaijan’s achievements in climate action. She underscored the country’s diverse renewable energy potential, including wind, solar, and geothermal sources.

Other speakers included Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur; Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador; Lord Fakafanua, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga; Phoebe Koundouri, President of the World Environmental and Resource Economists Association and Chair of the UN SDN Global Climate Hub; Rashid Alimov, former Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan; Hakima El Haite, President of Liberal International; and Manuel Pulgar Vidal, former Minister of Environment of Peru and Climate and Energy Global Practice Leader at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The panel continued with in-depth discussions on global climate challenges.
