Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Anacláudia Rossbach paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Kenya on April 15, the embassy told reporters.
According to the embassy, Rossbach and her delegation were first introduced to the memorial room dedicated to Azerbaijan’s national leader Heydar Aliyev, located within the embassy building, as well as the statehood corner. The delegation also honored the memory of the late leader.
During the meeting, Ambassador Sultan Hajiyev briefed the guests on Azerbaijan’s statehood history, cultural heritage, the life and leadership of Heydar Aliyev, and the achievements of modern Azerbaijan under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The ambassador emphasized that Azerbaijan is currently the only country conducting large-scale reconstruction efforts in a post-conflict context entirely through national resources and in line with contemporary urban development principles. He also highlighted the challenges caused by landmines in the liberated territories and ongoing humanitarian demining efforts.
The two sides expressed satisfaction with the dynamic cooperation between Azerbaijan and UN-Habitat. They exchanged views on shared priorities related to the global significance of the upcoming thirteenth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF), which Azerbaijan will host from May 18-22, 2026. Rossbach welcomed the Azerbaijani government’s active support in the preparation for WUF13.
The UN-Habitat executive director also commended Azerbaijan’s successful organization of the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP). She underscored the importance of joint initiatives under COP29’s leadership and praised the productive meetings held during her visit to Azerbaijan. Rossbach noted that Azerbaijan’s global efforts to bridge sustainable urbanization and climate action through platforms like COP and WUF play a key role in advancing international cooperation. She reaffirmed UN-Habitat’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Azerbaijan.
