CIS Council of Heads of Migration Bodies convenes in Baku

Baku hosted Thursday the 29th meeting of the Council of Heads of Migration Bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

In his remarks, Vusal Huseynov, Chief of Azerbaijan’s State Migration Service, briefed the participants on the progressive migration management model developed in Azerbaijan over the recent years. He also expressed Azerbaijan’s willingness to collaborate with the CIS member states in migration management.

"The interstate partners and negotiations with international organizations drive the legal migration forward, contributing to fruitful use of its potential and implementation of the relevant projects,” he added.

Huseynov underscored that new migration realities had emerged in the region following the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. He also highlighted the country’s mine problem, adding that humanitarian demining is officially declared the 18th National Sustainable Development Goal in Azerbaijan.

Nizami Safarov, Member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, Chairman of the Permanent Commission on Social Policy and Human Rights of CIS, emphasized the crucial role of the parliament of CIS member states in developing the legal framework on migration.

Subsequently, Andrei Kikot, First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation- Head of the Service for Issues of Citizenship and Registration of Foreign Citizens of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was elected as a new Chairman of the CIS Council of Heads of Migration Bodies.

Addressing Andrei Kikot noted that the migration flows could contribute positively to the economic, demographic, and social development of the countries, saying that these flows are also coming with huge risks.

“In this vein, one of the Council’s key internal tasks is stepping up the effectiveness of the relevant bodies,” he added.
