“The world is fully aware of the threat posed by the climate crisis. Despite contributing the least to global emissions, African countries stand on the frontline of these challenges,” said Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, as he addressed the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACW).
Babayev stressed that the climate crisis presents a serious global threat, disproportionately affecting African nations with the lowest share of emissions. He highlighted Africa’s young and ambitious population, vast renewable energy potential, and rich mineral and natural resources as key drivers of sustainable development.
He underlined that Azerbaijan’s participation in the summit reflects its commitment to forging new partnerships and exploring investment opportunities, particularly through initiatives such as Mission 300.
Babayev further noted that Baku has already established rules for highly reliable carbon markets, which have the potential to generate up to $1 trillion annually. “The main issue now is the fulfillment of the commitments made,” he emphasized.
