Wrestling competitions have kicked off at the Islamic Solidarity Games taking place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, AzVision.az reports with reference to the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation.
Today, Greco-Roman wrestling competitions were held in four weight categories.
Azerbaijani wrestler Nihat Mammadli (60 kg) defeated Latuf Madi from the Comoros Islands with a complete advantage (11:0), but in the quarterfinals he lost to the silver medalist of the last world championship, Uzbekistan’s Alisher Ganiev (0:3), and to Iranian Ali Vafa (2:3) in the fight for third place.
Khasrat Jafarov (67 kg) reached the final, defeating Afghan Mohamed Aslam Zadeh with a score of 9:0, Kyrgyzstani Razzaq Beishekeev with a score of 5:3 and Egyptian Mohamed Abdelrehim with a score of 4:1. The Azerbaijani athlete, who faced Olympic and world champion Said Esmaili of Iran in the decisive match, finished the first half with a score of 3:0. However, in the end he lost with a score of 3:8, becoming the silver medalist of the Islamic Solidarity Games.
Another representative of Azerbaijan, Ulvu Ganizade (77 kg), lost in the qualifying round to Amir Abdi from Iran (0:9). Although he defeated Khabibjan Zukhurov of Tajikistan with a score of 5:3 in the consolation match, he lost to Abdulla Aliyev of Uzbekistan in the match for third place on the last points (2:2).
Islam Abbasov (87 kg) lost to the world champion from Iran, Gulamreza Farukhisenj (0:3), in the quarterfinals, and to Kyrgyzstan’s Asan Janisov (0:9) in the match for the bronze medal.
