Today, there are over 1,500 foreign refugees and asylum seekers in Azerbaijan, Gurban Sadigov, the head of the Department for the Problems of Refugees, IDPs and Migration under the Cabinet of Ministers, said at the 66th session of Executive Committee of UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Nearly half of these persons have arrived in Azerbaijan from Afghanistan, Sadigov said, noting that Azerbaijan is doing purposeful work in close cooperation with UNHCR for finding and applying lasting solutions to related problems.
He went on to add that the procedure for making amendments to the relevant legislation of Azerbaijan regarding additional patronage has already started on the initiative of the UNHCR and State Migration Service. “Potential persons who can benefit from additional patronage in Azerbaijan are citizens of Afghanistan,” he said.
