Winter Tourism Season Kicks Off in Azerbaijan

The State Tourism Agency organized a two-day media tour to Shahdag Mountain Resort, operating under the Agency, on 18 and 19 December to kickstart the tourism season across the country.

The goal of the media tour is to promote winter tourism in Azerbaijan, highlight the Resort’s readiness for the winter season, introduce the tourism products offered to visitors, and raise awareness about the work carried out at the resort, as well as recent developments and innovations.

Media representatives were given a video presentation on the Resort activities in 2025 and were informed about the ongoing reconstruction and infrastructure projects implemented at the complex.

Rustam Najafov, Chairman of the Shahdag Mountain Resort, noted that more than 300,000 visitors had visited the resort between 1 January and 15 December 2025.

He added that, the fifth phase of expansion at the winter resort envisages the installation of two lift bases and 76 snow generators, the construction of new ski slopes with a total length of 7,070 metres, the building of a 150,000-cubic-metre water reservoir, and the commissioning of Cable Line 26 by the end of the winter season. These developments are expected to contribute to the further development of skiing infrastructure.

Emphasizing that over the past two years Shahdag has evolved not only into a leisure destination but also into a prestigious venue for hosting national and international sporting competitions, Rustam Najafov noted that a 500-seat FIS (International Ski and Snowboard Federation) stadium has been built at the complex to host various international sports events. He also highlighted that during the 2026 winter season, Shahdag will host the Azerbaijan Alpine Skiing Championship, the European Championship and World Cup in Ski Mountaineering, as well as the final stage of the Moguls World Cup.

During the two-day event, media representatives were introduced to the services offered to visitors at the tourism centre and made use of ski and snowboard equipment, cable car lines, various attractions, and winter entertainment activities. The media were also introduced to special simulators that allow skiing throughout the year.

As a result of projects, carried out at Shahdag to date, the number of cable car lines has reached 15, the number of ski slopes of varying difficulty levels has reached 37, with a total length of 45 km, and six conveyor-type slopes have been built for beginners. In addition, 600 snow generators have been installed to ensure the slopes are constantly covered with snow. Moreover, the number of entertainment options and attractions in both indoor and outdoor areas during the winter and summer seasons has reached 40, while the number of food and beverage outlets has increased to 64.
