Iran adopts plan to fight oil pollution at Caspian Sea
The National Iranian Oil Company has adopted a comprehensive plan to remove oil pollution from the Caspian Sea.
Announcing that Iran calls on all Caspian Sea littoral countries to observe environmental concerns about the sea, Caspian Oil Company CEO Ali Osuli said the new plan has been devised to fight high risks of oil pollution in the sea, SHANA news agency reported Oct. 27.

He explained that according to the plan, hydrodynamic data including meteorological reports and the recognition of prevalent winds in the southern Caspian Sea as well as the formation of waves in the area are to be gathered from 32-year archives and be used in a system that will provide 72 scenarios to deal with the pollution.

He also called on littoral countries to form a database that could be used to protect the sea and deal with related crises when oil pollutants threaten the sea.

Iran held a maritime drill on meeting oil spill emergency situations on June 15 and 16.

Iran has launched three oil recovery ships in the Caspian Sea to collect seawater polluted by oil, the official IRIB news agency reported Dec. 8.

The Caspian Sea, surrounded by Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Russia and Iran ,has long suffered pollution from oil extraction and other industries.

Russians are the greatest polluters. They reportedly create 80 percent of the Caspian pollution.

In July 2013, the then deputy head of Iran ’s Environmental Protection Organization, Abdolrza Karbasi said that the Caspian Sea is mainly polluted with oil, industrial and household waste, as well as sewage.
