Refugee factor important in Karabakh conflict settlement- French co-chair
The Public Union “Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh” held on Wednesday a meeting with OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs Igor Popov (Russia), James Warlick (US), Pierre Andrieu (France) and Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk.

Addressing the meeting, Public Union head Bayram Safarov said he hopes for a fair position of the Minsk Group on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“Unfortunately, the Minsk Group’s attempts did not yield results,” Safarov said, expressing hope that the MG countries will spare no efforts to restore justice, and Azerbaijanis will return to their lands.

Azerbaijan seeks the conflict to solve peacefully, he added.

Russian co-chair Igor Popov in his turn said that this meeting was very fruitful.

“Our visit to the region will end today. In Armenia, we discussed political developments, the escalation of tension on the contact line of troops and the issue of establishment of humanitarian cooperation,” the Russian co-chair said.

US co-chair Warlick said they are aware of the fact that last 20 years have been very difficult for the Azerbaijani community.

“We met with the IDPs during our last visit to Baku. We visited the family and saw their desire of returning to their native lands. This meeting impressed us. As I mentioned in Yerevan, it is impossible to achieve a comprehensive solution, unless the resolution of refugee problems and their return to native lands. We mention it during meetings with the presidents and ministers. We also raise the issue of public diplomacy. We consider that it is very important,” he noted.

French co-chair Pierre Andrieu noted that they are aware of the importance of refugee factor in conflict’s settlement.

“We are discussing this issue. During meetings with ICRC representatives, we initiated the identification of those died during the Karabakh war. This process is underway both in Azerbaijan and Armenia,” he noted.
