Elected mayor in 2013, Marino struggled to address Rome’s financial problems and his approval ratings plummeted.
The leaders of Marino’s party – the Democratic Party (PD), now led by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi – and Renzi himself withdrew their support for the mayor.
Amid a scandal over his expenses, Marino finally resigned on 8 October, before changing his mind and withdrawing his resignation.
Marino denies any wrongdoing relating to his expenses.
The withdrawal of the resignation risked plunging Rome into chaos, and was also seen as an embarrassment to Renzi.
In a move to finally end the impasse and oust Marino, more than half of Rome’s city councillors resigned en masse on Friday.
After which, he resigned again.
