More than 250,000 people have been killed during the Syrian Civil War. The more than four-year-old conflict has given rise to the Islamic State group, formerly known as either ISIL or ISIS, which now controls swaths of land in Iraq and Syria.
World leaders met in New York Friday for talks aimed at putting an end to the conflict. In a show of unity, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution endorsing a road map for peace.
Shortly thereafter, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow is prepared to scale up its military intervention. Both Russia and the U.S. say they want to destroy the Islamic State group, but they have divergent opinions on the fate of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Russia has supplied military aid to the Assad government, while the U.S. says it supports groups opposed to both Assad and the militant group.
