Attempts to include Azerbaijan in
Attempts to add Azerbaijan to the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act will not succeed, Samad Seyidov, MP, head of the Azerbaijan-US interparliamentary working group, told on Dec.30.
He made the remarks commenting on some media reports that the US Congress is going to include Azerbaijan in the Magnitsky list.

Seyidov said some local media outlets distort this issue.

According to the MP, since early 2015, Congress has been discussing the Global Magnitsky Act, and this [act] has already been tabled at the committee level.

“This is a mere initiative of some congressmen and senators to apply the anti-Russian Magnitsky Act to other countries and individuals,” he noted.

He also added that the bill “Azerbaijan Democracy Act” recently submitted to Congress by Congressman Christopher Smith is nothing but an attempt to list Azerbaijan with the help of Armenians in the Magnitsky Act which is likely to be adopted in 2016.

“It is not about discussing a particular document regarding Azerbaijan,” Seyidov said, calling on local media outlets to take this into consideration while covering this issue.
