India had already said the 10 soldiers were unlikely to be found alive after the incident at the Siachen Glacier, close to the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. The army announced Monday that Lance Naik Hanamanthappa had been found alive after being buried under nearly 8 m of snow at an altitude of 5,900 m — but was in a critical condition, Agence France-Presse reports.
“All other soldiers are regrettably no longer with us,” General D.S. Hooda, of the army’s northern command, said in a statement, adding that rescuers were going to attempt to move the surviving soldier to a hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday.
“We hope the miracle continues. Pray with us,” the general added.
