Turkey speeding up third airport construction in Istanbul
Turkey is accelerating construction of the third airport in Istanbul, said Binali Yildirim, minister of transport, maritime affairs and communications, the TRT Haber news channel reported Feb. 9.
The minister said the construction of the third airport is necessary, because the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, despite of its capabilities, doesn’t have enough time to receive all the flights.

He also said that new runways will be built at the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport.

The third airport of Istanbul will be commissioned in early 2018. It is being built near the Lake Terkos in the north of Istanbul.

The airport is expected to be one of the largest in the world and will be named after the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
