Ombudsman issues statement on 24th anniversary of Khojaly Genocide
Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova has issued a statement on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the Khojaly Genocide.

The statement reads that the Khojaly Genocide, which was a part of Armenian aggressive policy against Azerbaijan and resulted in mass violation of human rights and freedoms, is another terrible example of long-term ethnic cleansing and genocide policy carried out by the Armenian armed forces and their supporters against Azerbaijan, press service of the Ombudsman’s Office told.

Though 24 years have passed, the Khojaly Genocide has not yet been given legal assessment at the international level. Those who killed innocent civilians should be brought to justice and punished, said the statement.

The statement is addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, United Nations Security Council, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, European Commission, Council of Europe, OSCE, International Ombudsman Institute, European Ombudsman Institute and Asian Ombudsman Association, International Peace Bureau, ombudspersons of foreign countries, embassies of the Republic of Azerbaijan abroad, as well as the foreign embassies in Azerbaijan, and 180 organizations of the Azerbaijani Diaspora.

The statement will be also submitted to the 31st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
