Speaking to reporters in Baku, Appathurai said the cause of tensions between Russia and Turkey is repeated violations of Turkish airspace. “Despite numerous warnings, the Russian air forces continued to violate Turkish airspace.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has recently called on both sides to refrain from aggravating the situation, he added.

“The secretary general and all members of the Alliance agree on the importance of risk prevention and the need to seek further transparency. There is military activity, for which Russia is fully responsible. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has repeatedly expressed his willingness for any negotiations with a view to increasing transparency and reducing risks. We have not seen any progress so far,” Appathurai said.
