Fighter Jets Target Libya`s Sabratha, 40 Killed
Dozens of people were killed by an overnight airstrike in Libya, a local official said.
Unidentified aircraft struck buildings in Sabratha, Mayor Hussein al-Thwadi told Reuters.

The New York Times reported that U.S. jets had hit an ISIS camp near the western coastal city.

Citing a Western official, the newspaper said the target of the raid was a senior Tunisian operative linked to two major terrorist attacks in Tunisia last year. NBC News could not immediately independently verify that report.

Sabratha is located near the Tunisian border, and it is also one of the areas where Western officials say ISIS militants had some presence as part of their expansion in the North African state.

Al-Thwadi said 41 people were killed and 6 wounded in the airstrike, which took place at 3:30 a.m. Friday (8:30 p.m. Thursday ET) in the Qasr Talil district.

The death toll could not immediately be confirmed with other officials.

The city, which had a population of about 100,000 in the 2004 census, lies on the Mediterranean coast about 40 miles west of Tripoli. It is home to an archaeological site of Roman ruins.
