Far-right protest in Liverpool turns violent
A far-right march in Liverpool has triggered shocking scenes of violence as demonstrators threw bricks and fireworks at police.
A march by North West Infidels was switched from Manchester to Liverpool and the last minute and sparked a heavy police presence in the city centre.

Eye-witnesses say protesters launched missiles at police and one officer was taken to hospital after suffering from concussion.

According to the Liverpool Echo , the march began at around 2pm this afternoon near Liverpool Lime Street railway station.

The group were met by anti-facism protesters and scuffles broke out between the two groups of campaigners.

North West Infidels describe themselves as `giving a voice to the north west` and `standing up for freedom of expression`.

Supporters were seen holding up pieces of paper saying `refugees not welcome`.

The group posted a message on Facebook yesterday informing the Manchester event was a ‘red herring’ and told supporters to gather in Liverpool.

The protest is ongoing and no arrests are thought to have been made so far.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “Merseyside Police would like to make it clear that while it will facilitate peaceful protest it will not tolerate disorder, criminal or anti-social behaviour during any demonstration.

“Officers will monitor the situation as the safety of the public is our main priority and will work to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.

“Our officers will take robust action against anyone found to have committed an offence, in order to ensure the safety of the public.”
