The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) is a new stage in relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan, said Federica Mogherini, EU
She made the remarks at the 2nd Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council in Baku Feb. 29.

Mogherini thanked Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for organizing this meeting, expressing the EU’s support to the [SGC].

This project is a contribution not only to the energy diversification but also to the strengthening of energy security, political and economic ties, according to the high representative.

Mogherini underlined the importance of resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “It is important to restore stability in the region. The EU is continuing its efforts to preserve peace in the South Caucasus,” she added.

Maros Sefcovic, European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union, said the discussions held as part of the meeting were productive.

“There is progress on the project in all countries. The [SGC] project is being implemented in a very important region. I express my gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for organizing this meeting,” he said.
