Georgia hopes for early solution to delimitation issue with Azerbaijan
Georgia hopes for an early solution to delimitation issue with Azerbaijan, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze said.
He made remarks at a press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku March 7.

“The issue of delimitation should be removed from the agenda. I hope that we will have to deal with the issue by the next meeting,” the Georgian FM said.

Georgia and Azerbaijan have exemplary bilateral relations, Janelidze said, noting that mutual high-level visits are of huge importance.

The Azerbaijani president’s visit to Georgia last year boosted bilateral ties, and the Georgian president too is expected to pay a visit to Azerbaijan, the minister added.

Janelidze emphasized the energy sector as one of the most important areas of cooperation.

“Our country’s demand for gas has mounted lately. As a strategic partner, Azerbaijan consented to increasing the volume of natural gas and an agreement was signed. When talking about energy, it should be mentioned that this year we will mark the 20th anniversary of the Baku-Supsa project, which several strategic projects are based upon,” he said.

The minister noted that a number of notable events took place around the Souterhn Gas Corridor project too.

“We’re going to successfully cooperate around this project as well. Also, this cooperation will develop in the transport area too. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project will open up new opportunities. It will be useful experience for the region, countries and private sector. We will continue this cooperation on an international level. Thus, we will strengthen the image of the two countries,” he added.

Janelidze underlined the importance of enhancing cooperation between the two countries’ customs authorities which is an important condition for a transport corridor.

Preparations for the meeting of the intergovernmental economic commission are about to be completed, according to the minister. “Negotiations are underway on the topics to be discussed at the meeting. A number of documents should be signed. We hope that these documents will be signed at the commission’s meeting,” he said.

Georgia is ready to support the activities of Azerbaijan in the framework of GUAM, Janelidze said, noting that Georgia and Azerbaijan respect each other on issues of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.
