In September, the European Commission announced a quota scheme, providing for the resettlement of 160,000 refugees from the most affected countries by the migration crisis, throughout other European member states over the next two years.
"This is already 80,000 — a half. The rest 80,000 could be redistributed and resettled among other 25 [EU] member states," Schulz told reporters following a meeting with the participants of the EU-Turkey migration summit in Brussels.
He added that the leaders of the EU states, who he had already spoken with, were ready "to find a solution" to the ongoing crisis.
Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty. The majority of migrants arrive in Greece and Italy by sea in order to reach wealthier northern EU states.
